I am a Pretoria-based watercolor artist. My entire childhood was spent surrounded by pets; in most of my baby photos, the tail of a cat can be seen somewhere in the frame. Pets are like family to me; when I think back on my life, I can vividly picture the pet that was associated with that time period.
A pet is more than just an animal. It’s a member of the family, and it deserves a portrait. As an introvert, I’ve always been drawn to art. Whether it’s sketching or painting, I can fully immerse myself in the subject at hand for hours on end without interruptions from outside sources. I’ve tried a variety of mediums, from pencil to charcoal to acrylic, but watercolor has always been my favorite.
The translucency of the paint and the beautiful layers you can achieve have always drawn me to this medium. Art runs in our family, and the day I picked up my father’s watercolor supplies (who is an accomplished landscape artist), I knew I had found my calling.
I’ve painted everything from landscapes to flowers, but animals have always been my absolute favorite. I enjoy seeing how happy my paintings make animal lovers.
